At the “3rd International Livestock Science Congress” held in Ankara, Turkey, on November 14-15, 2023, a significant presentation highlighted the importance of biodiversity and sustainable livestock practices. The congress, organized in collaboration with the T.C. Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies (TAGEM), featured Prof. Dr. Dilek Arsoy and Dr. İbrahim Mahamane Abdourhamane. They presented a detailed morphological characterization of the Cyprus Fat-tailed Sheep, a native genetic resource of Cyprus facing the threat of extinction, using quantitative and qualitative trait analysis.

This study meticulously examined the genetic and morphological characteristics of the sheep breed, drawing attention to the valuable genetic resources in need of conservation in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The scientific efforts of the Zootechnics Department at the Near East University Veterinary Faculty aim to preserve these local breeds and promote their sustainable use.

The presentation, titled “Morphological Characterization of Cyprus Fat-tailed Sheep Breed using quantitative and qualitative trait analysis,” also seeks to contribute to the international literature. The congress played a crucial role in raising awareness and interest in the conservation of local breeds and sustainable livestock farming.
