Hosted by Near East University, one of the world’s top 500 universities, the “Equine Medicine Symposium” addressed current diagnostic and treatment approaches in equine medicine with contributions from expert names from Turkey.
Throughout human history, horses have not only been a means of transportation or a sport, they have also continued to be an important area of research in the development of medicine, science, and veterinary medicine. This multifaceted field is further deepened today through academic studies and expert meetings, while current information on equine health continues to be debated in the scientific community.
In this context, the “Equine Medicine Symposium”, organized by the Near East University Equine Club serving under the Office of Students Dean, was held at the İrfan Günsel Congress Center with high participation. The symposium, which included expert academicians from Turkey and various universities, created an important platform that combined academic knowledge with clinical experience. Throughout the day-long event, current scientific developments and clinical applications in the field of equine medicine were discussed. The opening speech of the symposium was given by Prof. Dr. Deniz Seyrek İntaş, Faculty Member of the Near East University, Advisor to Equine Club. The symposium was also attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Near East University, Prof. Dr. İsfendiyar Darbaz, department heads, academics, and students. The program, completed in four sessions, evaluated current approaches to fundamental areas of veterinary medicine such as pharmacology, internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics, and gynecology.
The symposium concluded as an important scientific meeting that strengthened knowledge sharing in the field of equine medicine and built a bridge between academia and clinical practice. At the end of the symposium, participants actively engaged in discussions by asking questions to academics during the question-and-answer sessions.

Current topics were addressed from multiple perspectives!
During the symposium, expert academics shared current scientific information with participants by giving presentations on important topics related to equine medicine. Prof. Dr. Oğuzhan Yavuz from Çukurova University made critical assessments regarding performance and treatment processes in sport horses in his presentations on “Doping in Sport Horses” and “Rational Antibiotic Use in Horses”. Similarly, Prof. Dr. Handan Hilal Arslan Yavuz from Çukurova University addressed current approaches to clinical diagnosis and treatment methods with her presentations titled “An Overview of Inflammatory Diseases in Horses” and “The Use of Dynamic Endoscopy in Respiratory Tract Problems in Horses.”
At the event, Prof. Dr. Deniz Seyrek İntaş, in her presentations titled “Laminitis in All Aspects” and “Tendinitis in Sport Horses: The End of a Career?”, drew attention to diseases frequently seen in sport horses and critically important for their careers. Prof. Dr. Kamil Seyrek İntaş, in his presentation on “Placentitis in Mares During Pregnancy”, provided scientific assessments regarding reproductive health and complications encountered during pregnancy.

Prof. Dr. Deniz Seyrek İntaş: “Theoretical knowledge, interdisciplinary collaboration, and field experience are crucial for success!”
Beginning her speech by saying, “We have come together not only for a scientific event, but also as a meeting point for knowledge sharing, professional solidarity, and a shared passion”, Prof. Dr. Deniz Seyrek İntaş, Advisor Faculty Member of the Near East University Equine Club, emphasized that equine medicine is one of the most specialized and sensitive areas of veterinary medicine. Stating that equine health is not limited to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, but requires a multifaceted approach centered on performance, welfare, and sustainability, Prof. Dr. Seyrek İntaş noted that with the increasing importance of sport horses today, the responsibility of veterinarians is also increasing.
Drawing attention to the importance of scientific knowledge and clinical practice progressing together, Prof. Dr. Seyrek İntaş said, “To be successful in this field, not only theoretical knowledge but also interdisciplinary collaboration and field experience are of great importance. I believe that every piece of information shared, every question asked, and every communication established here will contribute to our professional development.” Prof. Dr. Seyrek İntaş stated that the symposium created a strong environment for interaction among academics and students from different universities, and noted that such scientific gatherings make significant contributions to the development of professional awareness and understanding.
